喜納昌吉さんの曲である「ハイサイおじさん」に纏わる話はショッキングだった。

ハイサイおじさんは喜納さんの近所に住んでいた実在の人物をモデルにしているそうだ。そのおじさんが帰宅すると、家に毛布でくるんだものがあって、足が二本出ていた。自分の7歳の娘の足だということがわかり、触ってみると冷たい。毛布をめくると、首がない。ハイサイおじさんの奥さんが、子どもをまな板に置いて、斧で首を切り落としたのだ。そして土間の大鍋で、その頭を煮た。「自分の子どもなんだから、食べてもいいでしょう！」と言ったらしい。それを最初に見た隣のおばさんはショックで一年後に亡くなったそうだ。奥さんも精神病院に入れられて、退院したあと、自分のやったことの恐ろしさに耐え切れず自殺した。

沖縄戦で生き残った人の中に残る狂気が発露したのだろうか。しかし、ハイサイおじさんはその後、酒に溺れながら、みんなに疎まれながらも、陽気に生きていったらしい。それを歌にしたのが「ハイサイおじさん」だった。そんな地獄が背景にあるなどと一切感じさせないほど陽気な歌であるだけに、そのアンビレンツさに心が傾いでいくような錯覚に陥ってしまう。
